I don't know how widespread this series is or if it's just UK only but I thought I should mention them as they remain my fondest childhood novels.
It's set in and around the Abbey of Redwall which is populated by mice, squirrels, moles and other assorted animals. The first book 'Redwall' Deals with the events that occur when the war rat Cluny the Scourge arrives and decides that the abbey would make a great castle for his hoard. Some of the characters are truely superb. Basil Stag Hare is a stroke of literacy genius.
Cluney and Asmodeus are two characters that have to been seen to be believed. You just love to hate them.
I could go on, but there a lot of books in this series to be read. Just grab a copy of Redwall, try it and if you like it get the rest.

I've seen Redwall in the U.S. In fact, I remember shelving it at the library....a LOT. Seems like a lot of people liked to check out that book. I picked it up once but had trouble getting into it. It probably had more to do with me taking too many classes at once than the book being unreadable. I've always meant to pick it up again. Maybe I will this time.

The Redwall books are massively popular. When I was working at Clear Spring (a used bookstore) we couldn't keep them on the shelf. In fact, we had a wait list of people who wanted us to call if we got them in. So mostly, they never even made it to the shelves.
I should point out that I've never actually read them. I tried, but couldn't get into them. I think my problem might have been that I started sort of midseries and I had no idea what was going on.
