I do not like sci-fi. Other than true crime and horror, it's the only genre I really dislike. There seems to be lots of good stuff out there, but I don't have the gift to find it. I think it is all dry and boring and...boring. It never makes me laugh. That's important to me. A book can't be all gloom and doom all the time, and be good, imo. So come on, recommend some reading for me!

There's always Douglas Adams' six book Hitchhiker's trilogy. It's probably one of the best series of humorous books of all time, thanks in large part due to the absurdity of the sci-fi elements. The original radio drama is quite good too. Just try to keep a straight face when you hear Arthur Dent say, "Ford, you're turning into a penguin."
Humor does seem to be a lesser used device in sci-fi, but it's not that rare. Snowcrash made me laugh a few times. How can a book where the main character is named Hiro Protagonist not make you laugh?

I have read the Hitchhiker books. I guess I don't really think of them as Sci-Fi so much as just pure humor, though. I need to get my own copies of the books though. How many times can you check them out of the library before the librarian starts to think you are weird. I almost bought the omnibus used, but I really want the books individually as the collection is so massive!!
I haven't heard of Snowcrash. I'll have to look for it on my next library run.
